At inception, the Foundation sought support from businesses, encouraging them to adopt a school. In addition, the former model C schools were encouraged to transfer their school management skills to the underresourced schools. Notwithstanding the great strides made, the backlog of facilities required by the farm schools remains huge and is much more than the Foundation could handle on this basis.
To meet this challenge the Foundation had to find a regular source of income to fund its ongoing projects.
In identifying the source of such income, the Foundation has resolved to attract donors who will feel a sense of involvement in the projects, meaning that they get tangible results for their donation. Hence the establishment of the Durbanville Schools Foundation Patrons’ Project in September 2004. The Foundation has agreed that the Patrons’ Project will be guided by the following principles:
•The funding should provide regular income i.e. the funds raised should be regarded as capital and held in trust, and only the income should be used for projects.
•The donors should get a sense of involvement i.e. donors should receive something tangible for their donation. Patrons will receive a wall certificate and an annual newsletter.
•As the Foundation has been established in terms of S18A of the Income Tax Act, donors will be entitled to claim their donations as a tax deduction.
•There should be different classes of donors i.e. individuals, businesses, and large corporates. Donors will be acknowledged as described below:
Type of Patron
Annual Patron Life Patron
Individual R 1 500 R 15 000
Business R 7 000 R 75 000
Corporate R 20 000 R 250 000
Regular annual donors will be awarded Life Patron status once their cumulative donations have reached the prescribed amounts. The amounts may increase over time, and if so, prior annual donations will be valued at the current amount to qualify for Life Patron status.
THE APPEAL
We would like to invite you to be part of a progressive community initiative which will culminate in long term benefits for the needy households located in the greater Durbanville and surrounding areas.
Participation in this initiative will be a major boost towards your Corporate Social Responsibilities.
Over and above our guiding principles, we would like to assure you, the donor, of the following:
•That donor funds will be kept in a separate investment account at a reputable financial institution. The income earned thereon will be paid into the operating account of the Foundation.
•That, upon donation of the prescribed amounts, you shall become a Patron of the Foundation with a certificate to that effect.
•That your donation qualifies for a tax deduction in terms of S18A of the Income Tax Act.
•That Life Patrons will receive an annual newsletter.
•That business and corporate participation will enhance your Corporate Social Responsibilities
