Character Building

This program is developed for, and will be introduced to all schools in the Durbanville Schools Foundation.
It was developed in conjunction with the Principals, staff and governing bodies, and each school will need to formally adopt it.

Those schools that do adopt the program will need to fund it, and this is an appeal for funding. The cost is R1,000 per school per month for 11 months.

THE  SCHOOLS

The schools are all underprivileged schools. Most started out as farm schools for children of the farm labourers in the area. Historically, these children have dropped out of school early, and landed up as farm labourers or unemployed, with little opportunity to improve themselves. The DSF aims to increase the number of matriculants emerging from these schools. The Character Building Program is a key component in this regard, as it provides the children with the character to develop themselves and to understand what it takes to succeed in life.

The following schools within the DSF have indicated an interest to adopt the program:

Alpha Primary                                                                        850

The program will be facilitated and monitored by two highly qualified and experienced retired principals.

It will be a whole school effort, so every member of the staff will need to be involved in the program.  Parents and members of the governing body will also be encouraged to partake. They will be given responsibility for making sure that each chosen value is fully understood and assessed during the time of teaching.

The facilitators will spend time with all the classes and teachers, and assist the principal and parents.  Relevant material will be issued and advice given for projects and special events.

DONATIONS AND SPONSORSHOP

Sponsors and donations will be used to finance the following:

  • Travelling costs,
  • materials and
  • remuneration

for two facilitators. Facilitators will visit and teach at each school for at least one hour per week. Each facilitator will visit a maximum of five schools per week

As stated above, the cost per school is R1,000 per month.

Sponsors are free to choose the number of schools they are prepared to sponsor but  each school selected must be sponsored for a calendar year. As with our other programmes, donors should pay into the DSF Trust account,. The schools must take responsibility for paying the facilitators on production of facilitator invoices, and the DSF will reimburse the schools on submission of the relevant documentation.
